Saying “I Do” at the McDonald’s Drive Thru
You’ve heard of micro-weddings, but have you heard of Drive Thru weddings? In late August, McDonald’s Canada took the trend of micro-weddings to a whole new level. Instead of receiving a Big Mac and World Famous Fries® at the Drive Thru, two couples were greeted by an officiant to say “I do” under the Golden Arches.
While COVID-19 restrictions continue to sideline big milestone celebrations, many engaged couples have postponed their wedding plans or hosted micro-weddings via video conference instead. With the help of local Owner/Operator Jason Heath, McDonald’s Canada was able to host a safe, healthy and unforgettable experience for two lucky couples. Surrounded by close family and friends in socially distanced vehicles, the couples drove thru in a convertible, recited heartfelt vows and were declared married by an officiant standing in the Drive Thru window.
“It was an honor to be able to host the weddings at our very own McDonald’s Drive Thru. It was even more of an honor to hear from both couples about how McDonald’s has been part of their love stories,” Jason said. “Making a positive impact in the community and being a part of life’s celebrations, both big and small, is what McDonald’s is all about.”
Newlyweds Stephanie and Phil met at McDonald’s when they were crew members 14 years ago. Today, the couple has continued to work for McDonald’s while raising their four kids together. An impromptu wedding at McDonald’s was something Stephanie would often talk about with her partner, and now their Golden Arches love story has come full circle.
“I was the crew trainer that brought Phil behind the counter for his first shift at McDonald’s what feels like a lifetime ago,” said Stephanie. “Fast forward years later and we’re getting married at the place our love story began – if not for McDonald's, I can't imagine where our lives would have taken us!”
McDonald’s Canada supported the second couple, Aline and Aaron, through many milestones and hardships as well. “Aaron and I have been together for 12 years and engaged for more than a few, but life’s obstacles have put our marriage plans on hold,” said Aline.
Whatever challenge came their way, a trip to McDonald’s was always part of their solution. A Drive Thru wedding with their two children riding in the backseat was the perfect way to complete their love story.
These couples’ heartwarming love stories demonstrate a shared reality for millions of Canadians across the country that McDonald’s is more than just a restaurant. Whether it be a post-soccer game meal, a road-trip tradition or a late-night wedding snack, McDonald’s has long been a hub for milestones with family and friends.
