Celebrating the Big Mac on National Burger Day
May 27, 2025
Happy National Burger Day! The iconic Big Mac remains one of McDonald’s most-loved menu items, having not only stood the test of time but has also adapted to the changing tides innovation.
When Did the Big Mac Come Out?
The Big Mac's journey began in 1967 when Jim Delligatti, a McDonald’s franchisee in Pittsburgh, introduced a double-decker burger to compete with local rivals. Featuring two all-beef patties, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and a special sauce on a three-part sesame seed bun, it was an instant hit. By 1968, the Big Mac was rolled out nationwide and continued to gain popularity.
Ingredients with Integrity: Where Does McDonald's Get Their Beef?
Behind every Big Mac are trusted American-based food suppliers like OSI, Lopez Foods, and National Beef. OSI was McDonald’s very first beef supplier in 1955 and continues to be a key partner in the beef supplier system today. Lopez Foods, based in Oklahoma City, has been a key McDonald’s beef supplier for over 30 years, providing USDA-inspected beef patties made from 100% pure beef. Lastly, National Beef has utilized automated pack-off technology to their facility, which has greatly improved efficiency.

Keeping Things Fresh Over the Years
While the core of the Big Mac remains unchanged, McDonald's isn't afraid to innovate. In the ‘70s McDonald’s introduced the Quarter Pounder with cheese and the 2008 brought the McDouble. In 2024, the Chicken Big Mac made its U.S. debut, replacing beef patties with breaded chicken while retaining the classic toppings.
A Toast to the Big Mac’s Future
As we bite into our Big Mac today, we're not just enjoying a delicious burger—we're partaking in a legacy of innovation, quality, and sustainability. McDonald's commitment to responsible sourcing and understanding of environmental impact ensures that this beloved sandwich can be enjoyed by generations to come.
